Fairy Fencer F Review

This review does not contain story spoilers and only giving an overall review.

Voice Acting: Japanese > English.

Well, I played this game with Japanese voice acting. I’m glad that the English localization didn’t erase the Japanese voice acting. Because other than liking it, I learn Japanese language a little by hearing.
After a while, I played with Japanese and then change it to English. It so different. No offense, but I love Japanese voice acting. Because, in English, some of it doesn’t match the character, meanwhile in Japanese mostly suits the characters image and are more serious in giving emotion in their voice. If you’re English native and don’t mind hearing another language, you should go for Japanese in this game.
And also, because I play with the Japanese voice, sometimes it doesn’t match with the translation but only a little.
The English translation is quite rude. For example it has b*tch word. I don’t know if it’s the translator fault or not. But it gave me “boo” as a foreigner whose native language is not English.

Protagonist:

Lazy, careless, cocky, gluttonous, rude but kind male protagonist. I guess it’a nice pace because it’s quite rare for a protagonist.

Characters:

Many young characters and mostly women. And it’s quite typical in most Japanese story in game or manga.
Here’s the list:

  • ·         An oujo-sama character with a weird fetish.
  • ·         A character who’s fussy and nagging the protagonist.
  • ·         A busty character who’s quite oblivious and curious towards the protagonist.
  • ·         A characters who’s impressed by the protagonist and follow him till the end.
  • ·         An old man.
  • ·         A polite young man and other maternal character.
  • ·         A character who’s bad in common sense and child-like appearance.
  • ·         An enemy becomes friend and vice versa.
  • ·         And then there’s that one weird member in appearance (kinda like animal)

Story: 7/10

The conversation between characters sometimes flat, funny, light, kinda like daily lives conversation (I mean not that serious all the time). Even though some may found it boring, I still enjoy it till the end.
You can skip or make it go auto. And you can trace back the conversation in a log.
It has a quite unexpected plot twist.

Gameplay:

Too many tutorials.
Godly revival is quite interesting to do.
And then, there’s a world shaping. What fairy you stabbed will give you effects and determining the battle.
This game is like having a two phase. If you reach that phase, then it’s already half of the story. Second phase battle song is more epic, btw.

Graphic:

Anime-like 3D models. Not many 3D scenes other than battle.
Mostly visual novel like conversation. But it was quite nice that they made all the characters have a little movement despite being 2D (like Trinity Universe.)

Battle:

It was a fun combat accompanied with an engaging battle song.
In the field, other than rotate, you can also zoom in & out. Option to zoom in & out also available when you battle, so you can look from up close.
Beside that, you can skip everything, include conversation, your attack with skills and magic, and enemies attack. This is an excellent option that every RPG should have!
So you won’t get bored by looking at the same attack over and over again and makes the battle very brief, not consuming time.
It’s not difficult if you have a healer in your party. But there are some battles that won’t let you have a healer.

Music: 10/10 from me.

This game has many nice, epic, and engaging songs. Many of it with vocals, including battle song with vocals. I like many songs in this game, which is kinda rare for nowadays game.
There’s a song composed by Nobuo Uematsu.

Ending:

It has 3 endings. If you’re not careful, you could miss the ending with characters you wanted.

Play Time:

I finish it in more than 32 hours, I kinda take my time. But I think 30 hours is enough if you have no need to accomplish all the challenges.

Replay Value:?

I’m not sure, because it depends on your taste. I think one playthrough is enough, even when you didn’t accomplish all the challenges. I already remember the overall story.

Overall: 7.5/10

Fairy Fencer F is worth playing. The story is quite engaging and with some unexpected plot twist. The battle system is fun and brief (if you skip it).
If you liked Hyperdimension Neptunia, you should try this game.

Fairize!
